Ex-trustee Becker could return to Island Lake board

A former Island Lake trustee could be appointed to the village board Thursday night, filling the vacancy created when Tony Sciarrone quit to become police chief.

Mayor Charles Amrich plans to nominate Eberhard “Kiki” Becker for the post.

Becker, 66, was a trustee from 2003 to 2007. He's married to former Village Clerk Christine Becker.

Eberhard Becker couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday.

Amrich said Becker was one of four applicants for the seat. He described the former trustee as “somebody who knows what to do and how to do it.”

“I think he'll be a good fit for that position,” Amrich said.

The village board must approve the nomination. If that happens, Becker will serve until the spring 2017 municipal election, at which time he'll be eligible to run with other candidates.

Becker has the support of at least two trustees, Mark Beeson and Debra Jenkins.

Beeson said Becker is a good candidate because of his experience on the board and his continued community service.

Beeson praised Becker's demeanor, too.

“He's very well-spoken,” Beeson said. “He listens and then he just lays it out there.”

Becker's four-year stint on the board is a plus for Jenkins as well.

“I think bringing on someone with experience is great,” she said. “I welcome it.”

Thursday's board meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at village hall, 3720 Greenleaf Ave.
