Police: Gang member charged in West Chicago shooting

A 19-year-old gang member has been charged with shooting a West Chicago man five times Thursday night, authorities said.

Jesus Calvo Jr., formerly of Plainfield, is being held on $1 million bail at the DuPage County jail and is charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, possession of a firearm by a gang member and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Calvo is accused of shooting a West Chicago man in his early 20s Thursday night along Allen Street, one block west of Joliet Street, West Chicago.

“There was some type of falling out a couple of days before, but we have no idea what it was,” West Chicago Police Chief Mike Uplegger said. “We have not been able to to talk to the victim. He wasn't in any condition to talk.”

The victim, who family members say was not in a gang and was likely in the wrong place at the wrong time, is stable and was still hospitalized Saturday night. His family also said the victim had a kidney removed in surgery and was waiting to be interviewed by police.

Calvo was cited for a curfew violation in June 2012 in West Chicago, according to DuPage County court records. Calvo also was arrested and charged in January 2011 with driving while never having been issued a license, a misdemeanor. He pleaded guilty in February 2011, was fined $250 and issued court supervision, which authorities petitioned to revoke in August 2011, Kane County court records show.

Calvo's bond was set Friday morning, according to the DuPage County Sheriff's office. He must post $100,000 to be released from jail while the charges are pending. His next court date was not immediately available.
