Man charged with recording his sex assault of Elgin teen

A 57-year-old man has been accused of sexually assaulting and abusing a teenage girl he knew in Elgin and making a recording of it.

Ray T. Tonsul, of the 5200 block of Huffman Street, Skokie, was charged Friday with criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual abuse, indecent solicitation of a child and child pornography, according to Kane County court records.

Tonsul is accused of assaulting and abusing the girl between March 1, 2015, and April 16, and using the victim, who is between the age of 13 and 18, in a film, according to court records.

Prosecutors said Tonsul was turned in by someone who found evidence of the abuse and who knows both Tonsul and the victim.

Tonsul is being held at the Kane County jail on $750,000 bail, meaning he must post $75,000 to be released while the case is pending.

If he does post bond, Tonsul must not have contact with the girl and must surrender his passport, records show.

A message left with Tonsul's defense attorney, Robert Stoller, was not immediately returned.

Tonsul is next due in court Friday and faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of sexual assault and child pornography and must register as a sex offender.
