Vernon Hills surpasses Libertyville
Dylan DeBoer pounded 13 kills, Ball State-bound Lem Turner added nine, and Vernon Hills' boys volleyball team rallied for a 20-25, 25-21, 25-18 win over host Libertyville in a North Suburban Conference opener Wednesday night.
The Cougars (5-2) also received 4 kills apiece from Jared Bennett and Johnny McDonald, while Bennett and Cory Levin each dished out 15 assists. Bennett served 3 aces and totaled 10 digs, as well.
Alon Polischuk chalked 19 digs.
"Libertyville put a ton of pressure on us, especially with their serves," Vernon Hills coach Chris Curry said. "Once we cleaned up the errors and picked up the defensive effort, we had a good deal more success."
Stevenson d. Lake Zurich: Jesse Kesner and Grant Maleski had 12 and 11 kills, respectively, as the host Patriots prevailed 25-21, 24-26, 25-23 in the North Suburban Conference opener.
Erix Zalewski lofted 25 assists for Stevenson (2-1), and Alex Pieprzycki contributed 4 kills. Luke Feder led the Patriots in digs with 10.
Lake Zurich (1-4) received 7 kills from Nic Angelini and six apiece from Nate Amos and Nick Meyer. Amos also had 5 blocks. Jeff Carmody delivered 4 aces and 24 assists.
Lakes d. North Chicago: Dalton Solbrig had 6 kills and 5 digs in the host Eagles' 25-17, 25-19 win.
Nick Halberg slammed 5 kills for Lakes, which also got two apiece from Adam Macanowics, Avery Brodde, Zach Powell and Matt Haufe.
Joliet Catholic d. Carmel: Patrick Meadie and Kyle Zeman each had 5 kills for the Corsairs in their 25-23, 25-18 loss in an East Suburban Catholic Conference opener.
Ryan Fuller had 6 digs for Carmel (6-2).
"Hard fought at times," Corsairs coach Kevin Nylen said, "but JCA is too good a team to make so many errors against."
