The Soapbox: Dirty politics and Congrats Stevenson

Silly season:

Actually it's not. Elections are serious, but some groups insist on denigrating them with petty politics and trickery. Such is the case with a flier by a group called “Investing in Long Grove,” which grossly misrepresents the Daily Herald's endorsements for village board. Not sure what this group is investing in but it's certainly not the truth. For the record, we endorsed Charlie Wachs, Stanley Borys and Bill Jacob. For an instant and accurate check on any fliers that appear to claim our endorsement, go to dailyherald.com/election.

But for the serious ...

We're glad to publish responsible letters to the editor supporting candidates. Keep in mind, though, that the last day for publication will be this Friday, April 3. We'll be adding extra letters space as needed and we'll try to publish as many letters as we can, but for the best chance to see your letter published, write today.

Congratulations, Patriots!

Let us join in the congratulations for Stevenson High School's state 4A champs. Quite an achievement to become the first boys basketball state champs in Lake County. The school also is just the third in IHSA history to win a football and boys basketball title in the same year.

Get artful:

It's one thing that coarse humor and language have made their way casually into our movies and television and theater productions. But do we have to put up with the latest trend of including that language in the titles too?

Remembering the fallen:

Kudos to South Elgin's Steve Thompson, a Vietnam veteran who keeps the memories of World War II soldiers alive with his trips to Iwo Jima and two dozen islands in the Pacific Ocean. He gets signatures on a poster from the men who fought at Iwo Jima. He also collects memorabilia, and hopes his collection will help people learn about American history.

Plan for delays:

Time to find alternate routes through Lake County as projects start on several important roads. Construction is set to resume Monday on Peterson Road in the Libertyville/Grayslake area, and resurfacing projects begin Tuesday on a stretch of Rand Road in Lake Zurich, and on Milwaukee Avenue in Libertyville and Vernon Hills on April 6.

Keep parties out of nonpartisan races:

Municipal and school races are nonpartisan for a reason, so we question a Schaumburg/Palatine Township GOP fundraiser to support certain candidates for local races — two weeks before a GOP committeeman promised the organization “has not and will not” endorse in the April 7 election. And let's not split hairs between “endorsing” and “supporting.”

Really ... Is this necessary?:

Everybody knows North Aurora's Dan Laird paid his fine and was willing to do everything required when he got caught speeding in Wheaton. But 11 years later, due to a tragicomedy of court mixups, he's stuck paying anothr 120 bucks because of an inflexible court bureaucracy. As songwriter Phil Collins would say, “It's just a shame, that's all.”

Heart of a champion:

This summer, it will be two years since Eric Von Schaumburg was diagnosed with ALS. Through his fightlikeachampion.com website and Facebook page, the 31-year-old Schaumburg man and his supporters have soldiered on. Kudos to the Chicago White Sox for making their load a little lighter by allowing the former three-sport athlete to throw out the first pitch in a spring training game this week.
