Elgin man gets 25 years in prison for sexually assaulting girl

A former Elgin man was sentenced to 25 years in prison Thursday after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a girl he knew a decade ago.

Robert A. Shachter, 50, of the 400 block of Gregory Avenue, Glendale Heights, will get credit for nearly 300 days spent in jail since his May 2014 arrest.

Shachter, who faced up to 30 years in prison on charges of predatory criminal sexual assault and sexual abuse against a girl in February 2005, also must register for life as a sex offender.

He was arrested after a girl told investigators at the Kane County Child Advocacy Center she was sexually assaulted and abused by Shachter when she was 7 or 8 and living in Elgin, according to court records.

Kane County Judge Clint Hull accepted the guilty plea Thursday in which prosecutors dismissed other less severe charges, records show.

He also must pay a $1,400 fine.

Shachter could have faced additional charges for child pornography.

After his arrest, Shachter stopped making payments on an Arlington Heights storage locker he was renting and the contents were later sold at auction.

The owner who bought the contents found a "great deal" of child pornography and alerted authorities, according to a search warrant.

Authorities believed some of the photos in the storage locker could have been of the victim in a bathroom at an Elgin apartment many years ago, according to a search warrant.
