Details on Woodfield Mall's planned $13.9M renovation
Woodfield Mall officials have submitted plans for their anticipated renovation of Schaumburg's landmark shopping center to village officials and the estimated price tag is $13.9 million.
Schaumburg Community Development Director Julie Fitzgerald said Wednesday much of the work involves the first level of the mall, though the project will replace all the flooring upstairs and down.
The extensive renovation of the nearly 44-year-old shopping center's common areas will include upgrades to the seating areas scattered throughout, she added.
Village staff have issued a construction permit for the project, and work can begin at any time after it's picked up, Fitzgerald said. Because this isn't an expansion but only an internal cosmetic change, village board approval wasn't required.
The entire mall is expected to remain open throughout the project.
Woodfield representatives sent out invitations this week to an unveiling of renderings and further details of the renovation at a special event on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the mall.
Woodfield Mall General Manager David Gott said his company, Simon Property Group, won't be releasing any further information about the project until that event.
Woodfield went through a $110 million expansion 20 years ago that added the wing which today houses the Nordstrom and Lord & Taylor anchor stores as well as many other specialty retailers.
And 11 years ago, the mall's original fountain, waterfall and aquarium tanks near the grand court were eliminated.
Within weeks, Woodfield is expected to see the opening of the 40,000-square-foot Level 257, a Pac-Man-themed restaurant and entertainment center next to Sears. The business will include the only 16 bowling lanes in Schaumburg.
The neighboring Streets of Woodfield shopping center to the south is also undergoing a renovation of its exterior, as well as to the seating and dining options at its AMC Loews Streets of Woodfield 20 movie theater.
