Zaruba wins fifth term as DuPage sheriff

DuPage County Sheriff John Zaruba easily defeated Democratic challenger Mike Quiroz Tuesday to win his fifth term.

With all 756 precincts reporting, Zaruba, a Republican, received roughly 62 percent of the vote.

Throughout his campaign, Zaruba has maintained he is "not done" and promised to continue the county's fight against heroin and other drugs, including recreational marijuana, which he says will be the "next big thing."

Zaruba, who did not return calls Tuesday night, has pledged to continue to do his part to put an end to violent domestic disputes, child abuse and abuse of the elderly.

Zaruba said he also is poised to meet the new fiduciary and technological challenges that will present themselves.

"There is complexity and uncertainty to the rules governing law enforcement's use of emerging surveillance technologies and the sheriff must be prepared to adapt quickly to a fast-changing landscape of legal rules," Zaruba said during the campaign.
