Opening arguments set in Darien murder trial
Opening arguments will begin Tuesday in the trial of a Darien man accused of slashing the throat of an ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend and then kidnapping his ex-girlfriend.
Joseph Spitalli, 35, has been held without bail since the November 2012 slaying of Teymur Huseynli, 31, of Skokie.
During his time in jail, Spitalli also is accused of plotting to have his ex-girlfriend killed and make it look like an accident to prevent her from testifying against him.
Prosecutors said Spitalli grabbed Huseynli from behind and slashed his throat during a confrontation on the 7700 block of Wildwood Court in Darien.
The attack took place as Spitalli's ex-girlfriend watched helplessly, authorities said. She told police Spitalli jumped Huseynli as the victim was leaving her apartment with her about 12:25 a.m.
Prosecutors said Spitalli then pulled the woman into a car and repeatedly threatened to kill her and her daughter if she didn't follow instructions,
Spitalli faces six counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated battery and one count each of armed violence and aggravated kidnapping. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison.
Jury selection was completed Monday. Prosecutors said the trial could last all week.
