Pumpkins launched over skies of Mundelein

The Mundelein Park and Recreation District is going green as part of an effort to be more environmentally friendly, but on Sunday for their 7th annual Pumpkin Drop the main attraction at Keith Mione Community Park was red.

A crowd of kids and their parents watched in glee as the "Big Red" catapult, designed and built by Mundelein High School students, launched Halloween pumpkins across the park. Prizes were awarded based on distance.

As part of the park district's green initiative, the event also featured educational components teaching visitors about the benefits of composting and recycling.

Other highlights included pumpkin rolling down the sled hill and the fill-the-cans-with-pumpkins race.
