Fremd keeps share of West lead

The Fremd girls volleyball team, led by senior outside hitter Lane Hindenburg's 9 kills, remained in a first-place tie with Schaumburg in the Mid-Suburban West after a 25-23, 25-9 victory over visiting Conant on Wednesday night.

The Vikings (8-2, 3-0) also received 5 kills from sophomore middle hitter Ysabel Lee and 3 from junior middle hitter Mackenzie Bednarek.

Fremd was led on defense by senior Sarah Roberts' 10 digs. Setter Carly Roberts handed out 20 assists.

Katie Lomas and DeeDee Durr (2 aces) each had 5 kills for Conant (5-6, 1-2), which received 10 digs from Dhara Patel and 11 assists from Elisa Ambrose.

Schaumburg d. Barrington: Junior Abbie Rahn (10 kills) led the attack for the Saxons (6-4, 3-0), who posted a 25-16, 25-21 victory over the visiting Fillies (3-7, 1-2).

Directing the attack for Schaumburg were Jada Blackwell (9 assists) and Megan Hayes (2). Hannah Moore led the defense with 7 digs while Lexi Ross had 2 blocks.

Leyden d. Streamwood: Junior outside hitter Emily Steininger (10 kills), senior middle hitter Camille Lazzarotto (9 kills) and sophomore setter Autumn McGee (9 kills, 22 assists) led the way for host Leyden in a 25-16, 23-25, 25-20 nonconference triumph.

Maine South d. Maine West: Maine South won the Central Suburban League crossover 25-16, 25-18 in Des Plaines.

Allison Grzebien (5 kills) and Monica Liwag (2) were top attackers for the Warriors (1-9, 0-1) who also received 2 aces from Rachel Kölling.

"South has two strong middles and knows to use them," said West coach Randy Tiller. "Our middles are young and were challenged. Our serving was tough in Set 2.

"We're learning and improving every day. We'll work (today in practice) on our middle block and reading opposing hitters better."
