Six horses and one goat died in a ire that caused the collapse of a barn early Saturday near Wauconda early Saturday, authorities said.

The owner of the barn, housing a large stable and enclosed riding arena, managed to save one horse, according to a Wauconda Fire District news release.

But the rescue of the other animals was not possible because of the heavy flames and the building collapse, the news release said.

Firefighters were called to the barn on the 23000 block of West Milton Road about 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

Most of the blaze was under control in about 45 minutes. The building was a total loss, according to the release.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office and Wauconda are investigating the cause.

Units from seven departments helped battle the blaze, including Lake Zurich, Fox Lake, Barrington Countryside, Buffalo Grove, Grayslake and Round Lake.
