Kernels snap Cougars' home win streak

An early offensive day turned into a pitching duel later in the game as the Cedar Rapids Kernels (28-35) edged the Kane County Cougars (42-21) by a score of 3-2 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Sunday.

The setback, the Cougars' first loss in Geneva since May 24th, snapped a seven-game winning streak at home for the Western Division leaders.

Behind 1-0 after surrending a run in the first inning, the Cougars took their first and only lead of the day as they cashed in two runs in the bottom of the frame. A run-scoring double by Yasiel Balaguert and a sacrifice fly by Jacob Rogers completed the scoring for the Cougars.

Cedar Rapids reclaimed the lead as Jason Kanzler tripled home Bryan Haar. Joel Licon sacrificed Kanzler home for a 3-2 Kernels' lead.

Pitching on both sides dominated the rest of the game.

Paul Blackburn (5-2) shut out the Kernels in his final three innings, but suffered the loss.

The series concludes on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
