Denten helps Hersey past Wheeling
Freshman left-hander Kaitlyn Denten excelled on the mound and in the batter's box on Monday to help boost Hersey into the semifinals of the Class 4A Carmel regional.
Denten's single up the middle with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning drove home Cassie Zouras with the winning run as the No. 14-seeded Huskies topped No. 18 Wheeling 9-8.
Hersey (10-21-1) will meet No. 2 Libertyville (26-8) today at 4:30 p.m. in Mundelein.
A leadoff homer to right-center by Iowa recruit Angela Schmiederer tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Wheeling (6-27) scored 2 runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-6 lead.
Alexa Orlando scored on a wild pitch and Nikki Mikosz had a RBI double.
But the Huskies answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Jessica Schmiederer, Alysia Zaucha and Angela Schmiederer reached on errors to load the bases with no outs.
Zouras was hit by a pitch to make it 8-7.
Michelle Helminski delivered a game-tying RBI single to right before Denten's game-winner.
Denten (3-for-5, double), Katie Wingerer (2-for-4, 2 doubles) and Angela Schmiederer (2-for-5, home run) were multiple hitters for Hersey.
Denten had 3 strikeouts while Wheeling pitcher Katie Quagliano struck out five.
Mikosz (2-for-5, double), Christina Ambrose (2-for-5) and Michaela Vasey (2-for-4) were multiple hitters for the Wildcats.
Wheaton North 9, Rolling Meadows 1: Meadows senior Chloe Prodanovic had a double for the visiting and No. 19 seeded Mustangs (7-26) in the play-in game of the Class 4A Rolling Meadows regional.
No. 16 Wheaton North will face No. 1 Glenbard North in today's 4:30 p.m. semifinal today while No. 8 Fremd meets No. 9 Willowbrook at 7 p.m. in the other semi.
