Chavez deserves our nation's recognition

March 31 marked the birthday of Mexican-American social justice advocate Cesar Chavez. He peacefully and wholeheartedly fought on behalf of farm workers, migrants, the poor and the disenfranchised. Cesar Chavez was known as the Gandhi of the fields in light of his pacifism and opposition to all forms of violence. He embraced universal human rights, environmentalism, vegetarianism and animal rights. Cesar Chavez admired Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and he also merits national recognition for being one of America's greatest civil rights icons.
