Townhouse fire displaces Schaumburg families

A fire that started in a Schaumburg garage Wednesday night displaced two families in a three-unit townhouse building, fire officials said.

A passer-by noticed a car on fire within a garage on the 700 block of Whalom Lane and called firefighters about 7:20 p.m., Schaumburg Batallion Chief Rick Anderson said.

When firefighters arrived, the blaze had spread into a utility room, the second floor and the attic.

All residents were able to get out of the building, and nobody was injured. Two of the units were uninhabitable Wednesday night, Anderson said.

Damage is estimated at $75,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, he said.
