Consider the reasons for abortion

Mary Ann Cronauer's opinion Feb. 2 regarding alternatives to abortion, never mentions the reasons for abortion. She never mentions those pregnancies from incest, rape or a fetus developing without a brain.

Most women seeking an abortion have thought long and hard before making such a traumatic decision. If a woman doesn't want to become a mother, termination is better than drowning your toddler, starving your child or beating that child to death because of resentment. Motherhood is a difficult job and everyone isn't cut out for it, nor will every woman going through this emotionally charged condition be able to give a child up for adoption; nor are there enough people willing to adopt.

I do agree with terminations being done in the first trimester, unless there is a medical reason later on. We must understand the multitude of variables that may cause a woman to take this route. We must not forget the time period where women went to unscrupulous individuals for terminations that left them sterile or dead. There are too many factors involved to assume that everyone is on the same level in life and able to care for a child properly.

Here is a figure not taken into account: It costs $300,000 to properly raise a child from birth to 18, not including college costs. Now tell me how many young women barely out of high school have that amount available to raise their unplanned child? Unfortunately, some young men shirk the responsibility upon mention of a child, and parents disown daughters that embarrass them with an unwanted pregnancy; factors not considered when creating your opinion. Abortion may not be an option right to lifers would consider if pregnant, but the option should be available.
