Businesses speak in favor of Barrington video gambling

Barrington trustees last night heard from several businesses in support of allowing video gambling and from one out-of-town critic. Businesses say video gambling keeps them competitive when so many neighboring towns allow it — including Fox River Grove, East Dundee, Hoffman Estates and unincorporated Lake County. Charlestowne Mall buyer says smaller is better

A potential buyer of the Charlestowne Mall in St. Charles says the mall was built too big to be successful. In order to bring the mall back to its former glory, the buyer told aldermen last night that he would cut off the empty Sears building, a bit of the building on the west, as well as the food court wing and the double-deck carousel. Drivers must prepare for I-90 widening

Drivers on the Jane Addams Tollway (I-90) between Elgin and the Kennedy Expressway can expect lane closures at night while workers prepare for the second phase of the project. Work on the left and right shoulders will mean one lane in each direction will be closed at night and reopen by morning. Full story.

Model from suburbs advocates for animals

Glenview native Katie Cleary, a model and actress who was a finalist on “America’s Next Top Model,” has a new focus on an old love: animals. The longtime animal lover and advocate is using her professional platform to rally for animal rights. Cleary also held case number 11 on “Deal or No Deal” for four years. Full story.

Trestman emphasizes work ahead in talk of win

After Marc Trestman’s coaching victory in his Bears debut, he’s letting his players enjoy the win while focusing on areas of improvement. Trestman listed defensive improvements and work on the offensive running game as a couple of areas that need work before Week 2 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. Full story.

Cubs starting pitcher Travis Wood beat the team that traded him when the Cubs bested the Cincinnati Reds last night. Wood (9-11) was 0-4 against the Reds in his career. He allowed six hits and struck out seven. Full story.
