Armed robber in Schaumburg takes family’s vehicle

A Schaumburg man playing with his children in a neighborhood park became the victim of an armed robbery Tuesday night, police said.

The 36-year-old was with his children at the west end of Atcher Park, near the intersection of Syracuse Lane and Slingerland Drive, when he was approached at about 9:45 p.m. by a young man or teen who asked him if he could use his cellphone.

Police said the stranger then displayed a handgun and told the victim and his children to get on the ground. The armed robber then reportedly took the victim’s car keys and fled with two other males of approximately the same age in the victim’s vehicle which was parked nearby.

The victim and his children were not injured and ran to a nearby home where they called police. His vehicle was found abandoned a short time later in Roselle.

The armed robber was described as a black male, approximately 16 to 20 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall and wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt.

One of the people who fled with him was described as a black male, 16 to 20 years old and 5 feet 10 inches tall. The other person involved with the theft was a male of unknown race, approximately 16 to 20 years old.

Anyone who may have information about the crime is asked to contact the Schaumburg Police Department’s Investigations Division at (847) 882-3534 or policeinvestigationdivision@ci.schaumburg.il.us.
