Boomers lose 3-0 lead, fall 6-5

The Schaumburg Boomers jumped out to an early 3-0 Wednesday night only to see it dissolve into a 6-5 loss to the Southern Illinois Miners at Boomers Stadium.

The Boomers (23-19) scored 3 runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Alexi Colon’s 2-run double to give right-hander Chris Phelan some well-deserved run support.

Phelan worked 623 innings, scattering 6 hits and allowing just 2 runs before leaving with the lead. However, a third straight quality start for the Boomers’ righty was not enough for a victory. The bullpen surrendered a 4-run eighth inning as Steve Liddle tied the game at 3-3 with a solo shot to start the rally.

Colon finished 2-for-4, and Michael Valadez added 2 hits and an RBI in the loss.

The Boomers and the Miners meet in Game 3 of the series Thursday at 6:30 p.m. as Chicago native Mike Giovenco (3-4, 4.75) takes on Richard Sullivan (2-3, 4.40) for Southern Illinois.
