Grim details emerge on murder-suicide near Darien
A Darien-area man may have been upset about his finances and losing his job when he opened fire on his family Tuesday, killing his wife and two daughters and then turning the gun on himself, law enforcement sources said yesterday. Full story.
Storms blow through the suburbs
Heavy storms brought strong winds and significant rain through the suburbs last night. More than 350 flights were canceled at O’Hare International Airport and multiple Metra lines experienced delayed service during the evening rush, with some trains running up to 90 minutes late. Full story.
Kirk faces heat over immigration vote
After voting against further debate of an immigration reform measure, U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk reiterated that he wants to see increased border security in any proposal he votes for. “I support a two-step immigration reform that first secures our southern border and then creates a tough but fair path to citizenship for immigrants living illegally in the United States,” Kirk said in a statement. Former Elgin deputy chief on unpaid leave from new chief post
A former Elgin deputy police chief accused of identity theft and official misconduct made his first appearance in Kane County court yesterday. Robert Beeter, 51, of Elgin is now on unpaid administrative leave from his post as police chief in Stockton, Ill., his attorney said. Full story.
Mental fitness at issue for Arlington Heights man accused of killing dad
Faced with conflicting psychiatric reports about the fitness of 42-year-old Steven Cole to stand trial, Cook County Judge Ellen Mandletort said yesterday she will “err on the side of caution” and reserve judgment until after she hears arguments from both sides. Cole faces first-degree murder charges in the 2011 death of his 69-year-old father, Stuart Cole. Full story.
ESO’s new music director introduced to community
Conductor Andrew Grams called the chance to lead the Elgin Symphony Orchestra the greatest honor of his life last night during his formal announcement party in Elgin. The 35-year-old is only the fourth music director in the ESO’s 63 years. Grams’ three-year contract begins July 1; he will make his debut during the 2013-14 season’s opening weekend Oct. 5 and 6.
