U of I considers dropping some Ph.D. programs

URBANA, Ill. — Trustees who oversee the University of Illinois are expected next week to consider cutting some of the nearly 100 doctoral programs offered at its flagship campus in Urbana.

A committee has been reviewing the programs for a year and put together a list of programs recommended for closure.

Graduate College Dean Debasish Dutta declined to disclose the programs on the list. But Dutta told The News-Gazette newspaper in Champaign that the faculty members who conducted the review focused on the effectiveness of the programs.

Trustees are scheduled to consider the list at their regular quarterly meeting Wednesday in Urbana.

The Graduate College will start conducting the reviews on the regular basis next year.
