Hanover Twp. health expo dedicated to late director

Hanover Township is gearing up to host a community health and wellness expo that will also honor the memory of the woman who started it.

Trish Simon, who officials say was passionate about her work as the township’s director of community health, passed away last month after a six-year battle with colon cancer. The Bartlett resident was just 40.

Not long after her diagnosis, Simon started the expo in 2007 as a way to bring health awareness to the community. Last year, more than 800 people attended.

This year’s fifth annual “Just for the Health of It” expo will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Hanover Township Senior Center, 240 S. Route 59, Bartlett.

The township, Cook County Commissioner Timothy Schneider and the Victory Centre of Bartlett will sponsor the event, which will feature a blood drive and more than a dozen free health screenings for osteoporosis, diabetes, cholesterol and other maladies.

The public also can participate in raffles, chair massages and receive adjustments to their glasses. Games and a bounce castle will be set up for kids.

“Trish really wanted an event that educated our residents on a large scale about their health,” Hanover Township Supervisor Brian McGuire said. “Thanks to her efforts and the work of many others, residents can talk with health professionals about taking preventive measures for their well-being.”

To more information or to register for the blood drive, call the Hanover Township Office of Community Health at (630) 483-5665.
