Wood Dale man dies after falling from tree

A 43-year-old Wood Dale man died early Sunday morning, just hours after falling from a tree in a wooded area near his home, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

John Schlage fell from a tree near the 500 block of Clayton Court Saturday night, officials said.

Schlage was by himself when he fell from the tree, and paramedics were called to the scene between 10:30 and 11 p.m., said Wood Dale Fire Lt. Bill Loch.

Schlage was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m. Sunday, according to a medical examiner’s office spokesman.

An autopsy conducted Monday concluded Schlage died from multiple injuries suffered from the fall, and that alcohol intoxication factored into the death.

Police are investigating the death, but said it appears accidental, according to Wood Dale Sgt. Dan Wilson.

Police said Schlage was intoxicated when he climbed up a tree near his home and fell out of it.
