Wonder Lake water ski team to entertain at Mundelein's Community Picnic

Championship water skiers forming on-water pyramids is just one of the many events at Mundelein Park and Recreation District's Community Picnic.

The free event is Saturday, July 21, at Diamond Lake Beach, 1016 Diamond Lake Road.

This hometown get-together runs 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., beginning with free admission to Diamond Lake, a summertime retreat with plenty of shoreline for a cool swim.

Visitors of all ages and communities can enjoy kids' crafts, free lemonade, and pedal boats for excursions on the lake. There are also shaded areas for picnicking and food and snacks available for purchase.

After 6 p.m., when swimming and boating activities close, visitors can turn their attention toward the lake, where members of the Wonder Lake Water Ski Show Team will grace the waters.

A special show featuring tricks, highflying freestyle jumps, fast-paced barefoot skiing and those famous pyramids will take place. Visitors are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chairs.

Started just three years ago, the Community Picnic has become a favorite for visitors and recently received the “Outstanding Special Event” award by Illinois Park and Recreation Association.

Courtesy of Mundelein Park and Recreation District, the goal is to grow the event and hold it each summer for residents of Mundelein and surrounding communities.

“The picnic brings people together. It's neighbors meeting neighbors and pride in the community,” said park district Director Margaret Resnick. “Diamond Lake is just such a beautiful place, and we want this to really become something everyone looks forward to.”
