Carmel gymnasts to be honored at village board meeting

The state champion Carmel Catholic High School girls gymnastics team will be honored by Mundelein officials Monday.

Mayor Kenneth H. Kessler will read a proclamation recognizing the Corsairs’ accomplishment during the village board’s regular meeting. It’s the squad’s third consecutive state title and the fifth in the program’s history.

Only one other Carmel athletic squad — the 2003 varsity football team — has won a state championship.

“Winning a state title is pretty rare,” Carmel Athletic Director Andy Bitto said. “Winning two in a row is pretty exceptional. Winning three is once in a generation.”

The Corsairs won their latest title in February at a meet in Palatine. One of the athletes, Kristin Mirski, was named the 2012 Illinois High School Girls’ Gymnastics Coaches Association’s senior gymnast of the year, a first for Carmel.

The team’s state title actually is the fifth for head coach Sarah Mikrut-Doyle. She was a captain on the Carmel gymnastics teams that won titles in 1992 and 1993.

Monday’s meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the main fire station, 1000 N. Midlothian Road.
