Medinah park transforms into dog party
Thorndale Park went to the dogs Sunday, which is exactly what leaders of the Medinah Park District wanted.
The park district hosted its inaugural “Dog Day of Summer” event Sunday. Dozens of local dog owners congregated in the park for some outdoor fun with their pooches, from training demonstrations to runs through an agility course.
Carol Healy, the park district’s recreation supervisor, said the district had hoped for 200 people to attend. By noon, 110 people had shown up, and there were still a couple of hours to go.
“We’re very happy with it so far,” she said. “The weather’s been perfect — not too hot or cold, for dogs or for people.”
The park district decided to hold the event after seeing how many dog owners walked through the area in and around Thorndale Park, Healy said.
“It seemed like a great thing to do for the residents,” she said. “Kind of an unofficial welcome to summer.”
A slew of area businesses that cater to dogs and other pets set up shop at the park, as did the Chicagoland Dog Rescue, which partnered with the Medinah Park District for the event.
Attendees spent the day participating in dog games, getting training tips from professional trainer Alex Brooks, or simply enjoying some time out in the sun with other dog owners.
“It was fun,” said Roselle resident Jim Ellis, who brought his chocolate lab Tyner to the park. “A nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
