Local TriMathlon competition winners announced
Mathnasium of Vernon Hills recently announced the winners of its TriMathlon Day math competition.
The competition for third- to sixth-graders was held in conjunction with Mathnasium Learning Center's National TriMathlon Day, created to generate excitement about math among kids. Scores of the local winners will be ranked against those of other competitors nationwide and national winners will be announced in late May.
Students answered questions like: A number that is the product of exactly two primes has exactly how many factors? Answer: 4
The local winners are:
3rd Grade

3rd Place: Abby Kempf, Vernon Hills
4th Grade
1st Place: Patrick Sear, Libertyville
2nd Place: Christopher Donovan, Libertyville
3rd Place: Sophia Model, Wheeling
5th Grade
1st Place: Jack Benoit, Green Oaks
2nd Place: Sage Brenner, Vernon Hills
3rd Place: Fernando Bravo, Mundelein
6th Grade
1st Place: Jason Giza, Libertyville
2nd Place: Athina Herrera-NG, Libertyville
More than 4,000 TriMathlon participants competed nationally by completing three challenges: The Counting Game (tests student's ability to count from any number, to any number, by any number), Magic Squares (students are awarded points for creativity in developing their own math problems), and Mental Math Workout (evaluates student's Number Sense by asking them to solve given problems the ‘smart' way without pencil and paper).
