One teen killed, one critical after Elburn crash

A Batavia High School student was killed and a second student injured in a single vehicle crash in Elburn Monday night, according to Kane County Sheriff Police officials.

Lynlee Gilbert, 17, of Batavia, was driving her 1989 Dodge Dynasty 4-door north on Green Road near Clover Hill Road when the car left the roadway near a curve at about 8:30 p.m., said Lt. Patrick Gengler of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

He said the car crossed over the southbound lane of traffic and off the road on the west side of Green, then struck a tree in the heavily wooded section of Green Road south of Hughes Road.

Officials were called to the scene and extracted Gilbert, along with 18-year-old passenger Sarah Ginter of Batavia, Gengler said.

Both were transported to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, where Gilbert was pronounced dead, Gengler said. Ginter remains in critical condition at the hospital, he added.

Gengler said the investigation into the crash is continuing, adding it is unclear at this time if drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident or if the driver was texting.

He added staff members of Batavia High School was contacted and a crisis team is in place to speak with students or teachers in need.

He said the Kane County Office of Emergency Management and the Batavia Police Department assisted sheriff’s deputy at the scene of the accident. Detectives from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team are continuing their investigation into the cause of the crash.

A stretch of the road was closed down for a couple hours while emergency crews and at least one rescue helicopter responded to the scene, according to police.
