Hawks’ Bolland denies any setback

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Dave Bolland won’t play Friday night in Game 2 against the Canucks, but the Blackhawks center denied he has had a setback in his rehab from a concussion.

“No setbacks, it’s just a slow progress,” Bolland said Thursday. “You ask any other guy that has had this and it’s slow. You don’t want to come back too early. Guys like (Vancouver’s Dan) Hamhuis and (Boston’s Marc) Savard, who have gone through that and taken another bump in the head and it knocks you out for even longer. I want to make sure I’m back and fully healthy and ready to play.”

Bolland still hopes to be back at some point in the first round.

“Sometimes you’ll feel great and sometimes you won’t feel as great,” Bolland said. “Going through therapy is a slow progress, but I want to be back soon. I want to play in this series.”

Bolland said he has been helped greatly by James Gary, the Hawks’ mental skills coach.

“Talking to him, he’s been great, always keeping me positive and not letting me veer off that path of getting into that negative groove like this is not good and I’m not coming back,” Bolland said. “Just being positive and staying in that positive mind is going to help me as well.”

Bolland is practicing every day but has not been cleared for contact.

“The progress was encouraging and right now we’ll continue to reassess it, but right now he’s just OK,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said.

Injury report:Hawks coach Joel Quenneville called Tomas Kopecky #147;doubtful#148; for Game 2 with the upper body injury he suffered after playing just two minutes on Wednesday.Kopecky took hits from Canucks defensemen Sami Salo and Keith Ballard moments apart.Quenneville said center Ryan Johnson was fine after leaving Game 1 in the third period following a knee-to-knee collision with Tanner Glass.Fernando Pisani likely will take Kopecky#146;s spot in the lineup, although Joel Quenneville didn#146;t rule out using John Scott at forward.#147;I think Pisani has a good chance of getting in and we#146;ll see about Johnny Scott,#148; Quenneville said.Answering the bell:Canucks coach Alain Vigneault was impressed by Hawks rookie goalie Corey Crawford in his first playoff start in Game 1.#147;I#146;ve seen Crawford play many times this year and he#146;s been real good,#148; Vigneault said. #147;There#146;s a reason why they made him their No. 1 goaltender when they#146;ve got an experienced goaltender (in Marty Turco) that#146;s been through a lot of battles and that#146;s proven he#146;s a great NHL goaltender.#147;Crawford came in and took that No. 1 job and he#146;s been one of the best goaltenders in the league. They got 97 points. That#146;s a lot of points to get into the playoffs and he did a great job for them.#148;Rockford shuffle:The Hawks recalled seven more players from Rockford for their so-called playoff practice squad: forwards Jeremy Morin, Rob Klinkhammer and Brandon Pirri; defensemen Brian Connelly, Shawn Lalond and Ryan Stanton; and goalie Alec Richards.
