Roof fire extinguished at Streamwood Walmart
The cause of a a fire that broke out Friday morning on the roof of a Walmart store in Streamwood remains under investigation.
Streamwood Fire Department officials said firefighters were called about 10:45 a.m. to the store at 850 S. Barrington Road. The fire was struck out at 11:25 a.m.
The Walmart has remained open during an ongoing expansion, and the fire occurred on a roof area of the new addition. Thick, black smoke could be seen pouring from the building from several blocks away, a witness reported.
Even as the investigation continues, the store has reopened for business. The fire never spread from the area under construction, officials said.

Workers are blanketed by smoke as a fire burns in the construction area of the Walmart store at 850 Barrington Road in Streamwood. Shoppers were evacuated from the building as departments from Streamwood, Bartlett, Hanover Park and Hoffman Estates responded to the fire.
