From the lens of George LeClaire

During the Arlington Million Aug. 21, I noticed more women and men wearing iconic fashion hats, a change from the common baseball cap I had seen around the track while covering the race the last 10 years.

I spotted the derby, Stetson, fedora, panama, porkpie, trilby, akubra, boater, homburg, Stetson, bonnet, floppy, helmet, drawstring, sombrero, homburg, cloche, pillbox, flapper, bucket, gatsby, newsboy, cowboy, and lampshade hats at Arlington Park.

A women wearing a large red hat stood out in a sea of racing fans accessing the horses in the fourth race. Jennifer Wirth of Chicago wore a large red sun hat with a red veil, profile style brim, and tropical flowers on top to Arlington Park for a day horse racing which included the Beverly D, Secretariat Stakes, and Arlington Million.

I took Wirth's photograph using a low depth of field setting, to create an out-of-focus background and allow a clean view of the bright hat.

If you would like to take a picture with an out of focus background, set your compact or DSLR camera scene selection to sports or portrait, zoom into just your subjects face, and make sure the background is at least 10 yards away.

If you would like to escape hustle of everyday life for a day and visit a classic era, put on a fashion hat and head to Arlington Park for a day of horse racing in Arlington Heights.
