Marengo man charged in Streamwood standoff

Bond was set at $350,000 for a Marengo man charged with holding his ex-girlfriend hostage for 3½ hours Monday night in Streamwood.

Lawrence Cottone, 44, of Marengo was been charged with five felony counts including home invasion, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated unlawful restraint after police said he held his ex-girlfriend hostage on the 700 block of Stowell Place.

No one was injured in the standoff.

In Cook County circuit court Tuesday, the victim and several of her family members who were present during the standoff obtained an order of protection against Cottone.

Cottone's next court date is 9 a.m. Aug. 6.

Officers were called to the home about 4:30 p.m. Monday for a report of a man with handgun. Police were told Cottone had entered his ex-girlfriend's home and was holding her hostage. Two members of her immediate family were able to escape.

Officers had several neighbors to leave their homes and shut down a large portion of an adjacent residential neighborhood, police said.

When initial attempts to negotiate with the suspect were unsuccessful, the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System was contacted for assistance.

After more than three hours, police said, Cottone released the ex-girlfriend and later surrendered without further incident. A weapon was located in the home, police said.
