Bears interviewing 49ers' Day for quarterbacks coach

Shane Day, a former assistant to new Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz, interviewed for the quarterbacks coach job Wednesday at Halas Hall.

Day, 35, spent the past three seasons as a quality-control coach with the San Francisco 49ers, working with Martz in 2008.

When the Bears hired Martz on Monday, head coach Lovie Smith said that Martz would have a voice in choosing a quarterbacks coach to replace Pep Hamilton, who was fired on Jan. 5. Day is considered the favorite for the job and is the only candidate to interview so far.

Day also worked with new Bears tight ends coach Mike DeBord at Michigan in 2005-06, serving as assistant quarterbacks coach and quality control coach. He also assisted in the breakdown of opponents' film and in recruiting.

Quarterbacks coach is the only vacancy remaining on the offensive side of the ball for the Bears, but they are still in the process of hiring a defensive coordinator.
