Math Awards Continue to Multiply at HFCA
Dec 13, 2019 7:53 AM - William Thurston, noted professor of mathematics and computer science at Cornell University contends, "Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations or algorithms: it is about understanding." As the first middle school in Illinois to become STEM certified, Holy Family Catholic Academy (Inverness) agrees with Professor Thurston and is committed to building math literacy in its over 500 students from preschool through grade 8. "We develop math literacy by moving from memorizing and calculating to understanding and thinking like a mathematician," explains Principal Kate O'Brien. Math literacy includes reading and writing skills--not only writing down the steps of a problem, but learning how to critically read math problems and using words to describe a problem solving process. -

Lake Bluff's Own Mother Teresa "Mrs. Albrecht"
Dec 11, 2019 10:28 AM - When I first contacted Mrs. Albrecht a year ago, i was looking for a place to move in close to Lake Forest College, where i go for a Pre-Medical program. Not knowing then that Mrs. Albrecht will offer me far more than a place to stay; a home. Mrs. Albrecht was in her 70's then, and she was in the business of offering people with purposes in life rooms in her own house to help them achieve their goals. Mostly people in the navy going to the navy bases nearby, and medical students attending Rosalind Franklin school or lake Forest College. We were the primer beneficiary of Mrs. Albrecht's nonprofit enterprise. I started the business in the 90's Mrs. Albrecht said when she was telling me about her story of success. I have had many people over the years from all over the nation living in this house she said. Many of them are either doctors or navy seals at this time she added. Do you know what's my goal in life she asked me when I first moved in? What is it Mrs. Albrecht I answered! She said my purpose is to help my boys achieve their goals and thrive in their careers and personal lives. How many boys do you have, i asked? She said well now since you moved in they just became six, she answered. Mrs. Albrecht never had boys, but she was referring to us people living with her as her boys. 2 months ago I took Mrs. Albrecht to the ER after she went an ablation procedure few weeks earlier. It turned out that she have had some complications in the procedure and needed a second heart surgery, few weeks later Mrs. Albrecht passed away. She left me me submerged with a great deal of sadness and grief, but above all a determination to finish what Mrs. Albrecht have started. i plan to get help and buy the house to make a nonprofit organization out of it, keeping students and navy soldiers benefiting from the project that she have started long time ago. By following the same rules she initiated, and by allowing her "sons" to keep achieving their goals, i will make sure that one day her efforts will be honored, and the house will be a memorial to recognize her great American soul, and keep life pulsing through the house's walls. -
East Elementary Celebrates November Students of the Month

East Elementary Students of the Month have been exceptional role models for their peers, have shown lots of growth, and have exemplified all that District 6 stands for by being Respectful, Responsible, Safe, and Kind. MBX Cares Volunteers at Bernie's Book Bank
Dec 11, 2019 10:28 AM - Employees from Libertyville-based technology company MBX Systems volunteered their time on Dec. 6 at Bernie's Book Bank in Lake Bluff to help sort and bag gently used books destined for at-risk youth in the Chicago area. The event was part of MBX Cares, a company-sponsored philanthropic program that gives each full-time employee one paid day off every year to volunteer. MBX organizes more than a dozen volunteer activities annually and also allows employees to volunteer at a nonprofit organization of their choice. -
Expeditions at East Elementary
Dec 11, 2019 10:28 AM - Students at East Elementary in Zion have been embarking on some amazing expeditions with the help of Google. PreK Dual Language scholars explored giants of the natural world! Kindergarteners traveled to the chilling center of the polar region, experienced the scorching heat of the Sahara desert, and then took a dive into the deep blue sea. Lastly, first graders have been studying what it is like to go to school in different countries, and were able to visit these places with Google Expedition and Virtual Reality Goggles. These expeditions no longer limit teachers to the space of the classroom, and allow them to bring abstract concepts to life.
