Spend on research, not promotion

I wholeheartedly agree with Pete Mayhew's letter, "Why don't they join cancer fundraisers?"

The walk isn't until June but the TV ads start in January. My question is why don't other cancers get the same attention that breast cancer does?

With all due respect (and fear) my mother was twice diagnosed with breast cancer and twice had a mastectomy.

Fortunately, so far, I have not had breast cancer but was diagnosed with lung cancer almost four years ago and have been in remission for almost three-plus years but it can come back at any time. This money spent for TV ads could've been given to research. I'm sure people would find out about the walk through word-of-mouth, which is the best advertising and costs nothing.

Lung cancer takes more lives than all the other cancers combined, yet it and other cancers don't even get a second glance. Maybe we need a celebrity such as Elton John who has done much for AIDS or Bono who crusades for world hunger.

Unfortunately I do not know any celebrities.
