DadFest car show grows better each year

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there! It's our big day and we get to do what we want - I think! I am hoping to get out on the Fox River with my son and son-in-law for an early morning ski.

If you can fit it in your plans today, I would like to invite you out to Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington for the annual DadFest Car Show. The show is put on by the church's CARS Ministry, a fantastic ministry that through the use of donated vehicles seeks to serve the needs of those struggling with transportation issues in our church and the local community.

As a volunteer in CARS, I know if you make the effort to come out you will not be disappointed. Come for a service and the car show or just stop by the show. Service times are 9 and 11:15 a.m. The show runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features more than 150 classic cars and motorcycles.

You can check out an all-electric Tesla, the new Camaro, a DeLorean, lots of Corvettes, an offshore racing boat and lots more. And did I mention hot dogs? Free hot dogs are served throughout the show and live 1960s and '70s music will be performed by The Fabulous Ambassadors and Denny Diamond. Every year this show gets bigger and better with special interest vehicles that you may not know were ever produced.

The church is at 67 E. Algonquin Road in South Barrington. For information, visit willowcreek.org.

Strut towers

As a follow-up to a previous column on Dodge Caravan strut towers rusting out, we had a client in the other day who waited too long. He brought his car in to have it checked over for a running problem. While we were doing our visual inspection my technician noted that the strut on the driver's side had broken through the strut mount and ruined any opportunity for a reasonable repair. With all the other needs this auto had, it became an unrepairable vehicle.

The moral of the story is with the Caravan/Voyager don't put off repairing rusted strut towers too long or you may lose the window of opportunity for a relatively cost-effective repair.

Maintenance tip

Did you know that we see as many batteries fail on the first hot day of summer as we see on the first cold day of winter? In fact, maybe more fail in the summer. If your battery is 3 years old or older, it is wise to get it tested before we get that first 90 degree day (that is, if we ever get a 90 degree day).
