Dist. 50 needs leaders who will tackle tough finances

Woodland Elementary District 50 faces a possible $2 million shortfall, largely due to the economy, and some tough decisions about how to trim costs.

Incumbents Carla N. Little and Lawrence A. Gregorash bring leadership and continuity to the board as it deals with today's financial realities. We endorse both, though we have had differences with Gregorash in the past. We did not support his bid four years ago because his sister was head of the teachers union; she has since retired. And we agreed with those who criticized him when he went on to vote on the union contract instead of abstaining.

But he has a commanding grasp of the district's finances as well as a background in educational leadership.

Our other choices are Bari Faith Loebman, a former teacher with energy, enthusiasm and fresh ideas; and Joan Morris, who, while she has a reserved style, seems to be genuinely dedicated, hardworking and conscientious.

Finances are a priority for both Bonnie Berger-Neel and Beth Nguyen, and we encourage them, if not elected, to become involved in the district's budget review process. Catherine Campbell pledges to push for more transparency and information sharing no matter what happens on April 7, and we hope she will continue that effort.
