Spring Valley to hold lantern-led Halloween trail walk

Halloween is right around the corner, and Schaumburg police are again reminding families of both safety measures and alternatives to the tradition of trick-or-treating.

Spring Valley Nature Center will hold its annual Halloween Ghost Jaunt from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 26 and 27.

The wooded trails of the nature center will be filled with magic, mystery and fun theatrical vignettes. Groups of 15 will be led by a lantern-carrying guide for the experience, which lasts about 30 minutes and is best suited for children ages 5 to 10.

A campfire and refreshments will be available near the Merkle log cabin for those waiting. Registration is recommended as only a limited number of tickets are available for each night. Advance tickets are $5 for Schaumburg Park District residents and $6 for non-residents. Tickets cost $7 at the door.

Trick-or-treating times: Trick-or-treating hours in Schaumburg will be limited to 3 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 31.

Police recommend children be accompanied by a responsible adult and stick to well-lit streets in their own neighborhood. Daylight hours are strongly recommended.

Basic rules that every child should be reminded of: Never enter a home to receive treats, wear light-colored clothes and a costume that doesn't limit mobility or vision, and bring a flashlight for every group that will be out after dark.

All treats should be brought home for examination before being consumed. Cut and wash fruit and throw out anything unwrapped or tampered with. Call the police if you come across any suspicious treats.

Residents wishing to welcome trick-or-treaters on Halloween should indicate this by keeping their porch or exterior lights on. Police recommend distributing only wrapped candy.

Poundstone at Prairie Center:Ĺ’Emmy-winning comedian and National Public Radio panelist Paula Poundstone will bring her unique perspective on current events to Schaumburg on Oct. 27.

She will perform her one-woman show at the Prairie Center for the Arts, 201 Schaumburg Court at 8 p.m. that day. Tickets cost $38 to $40.

Well known for her appearances on "The Tonight Show," "Late Night with David Letterman," "Real Time with Bill Maher," and Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion," Poundstone has just been named national spokesperson for Friends of Libraries USA and will see the publication of the paperback edition of her fourth book, "There's Nothing In This Book That I Meant To Say," this fall.
