Teen held after striking bicyclist in Streamwood

Had 17-year-old Darrell Hairl left his basketball game a little earlier on Tuesday, he might not be in Cook County Jail today - nor a 28-year-old bicyclist in the hospital.

Out on bond on a charge of delivery of a controlled substance, Hairl was trying to make a court-imposed curfew as he drove eastbound on Heath Court in Streamwood to his home on the 600 block of Lacy Ave., Streamwood, about 7 p.m. Tuesday when authorities say he lost control of the car he was driving and struck the bicyclist.

The victim suffered bleeding and bruising of the brain and facial fractures and lacerations, said Assistant State's Attorney Jesse Opdycke, who described the man's condition as critical but stable following Hairl's bond hearing Friday in Rolling Meadows.

Hairl, a high school junior who works for the Salvation Army, left the scene but turned himself in to Streamwood police the following day. He was charged with failure to notify authorities of a personal injury accident, a Class 2 felony that carries a sentence of three to seven years, and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, a Class 4 felony that carries a one- to three-year prison term.

Hairl's defense attorney said the accident occurred as the teenager was on his way home from playing pickup basketball, trying to make a 7 p.m. curfew imposed as a condition of his release on the drug charge.

The new charges violate the conditions of his previous bond, which means Hairl will be held without bond until his next court appearance March 9.
