Palatine Jaycees host dogwalk
A mob of panting, bandanna-clad canines proved quite a sight on a recent spring day in Palatine.
An estimated 80 dogs and their owners gathered May 18 for the Palatine Jaycees' third annual K9-3K at Twin Lakes recreation area.
"We had some of the tiniest dogs, some of the biggest dogs and everything in between," said Jennifer Flebbe, who co-chaired the event with Whitney Kuhlin. "We had a great turnout and can't wait until next year."
The Jaycees don't yet know how much money the fundraiser netted, but all proceeds will benefit the Buddy Foundation.
The all-volunteer, nonprofit organization cares for stray, abused and abandoned animals. Its no-kill shelter, 13 years in the making, is set to open next month at 65 W. Seegers Road, Arlington Heights.
"It's an amazing shelter run by a group of people always wanting to help out," Flebbe said. "There's even a tunnel system for the cats."
Marilyn Czerniak, of Inverness, came out in support of the Buddy Foundation with her cavalier King Charles spaniel, Boston Cream Pie. She owns the Central Continental Bakery in Mount Prospect with her husband and said customers have been very generous with the donation box they set out.
"Something like this seems to bring out the best in people," Czerniak said.
