Bond set for man accused of shooting teen golfer with BB gun

A Cook County judge on Monday set bond at $50,000 for a Mount Prospect man accused of shooting a 17-year-old Elk Grove Village girl with a BB gun during a St. Viator High School golf meet last week.

Prosecutors said John L. Guy, 27, of the 0-100 block of West Wimbolton Drive, shot the girl in the leg on Aug. 17 while she was playing at the Old Orchard Country Club golf course in Mount Prospect.

The victim's father said Monday that she is doing fine and will continue to compete.

St. Viator Athletic Director Tim Carlson said the teen was shot on about the 5th hole. She was able to finish the round after being examined, and played in another meet later in the week where she was a medalist, he said.

"Obviously the news was startling when we first heard about it. It was kind of a shock to us," Carlson said. "One of the things to admire about her is her toughness."

The girl was a conference medalist last year and was one of the top girls returning to the team, he said.

Molly McMahon, a member of the junior varsity who was playing a couple of holes away, said while initially she was shocked, the team seems to be taking it in stride.

"We're just going to kind of try to get past this and work together as a team to really do well this season."

During the bond hearing Monday, Cook County Judge Joseph Urso set a daily curfew for Guy as a condition of the bond; the curfew essentially requires Guy to remain at home at all times except when working.

He faces misdemeanor and felony charges related to the shooting, along with a felony possession of a controlled substance charge, which prosectors said resulted when police found heroin in his car. His next court date is scheduled for Sept. 17.

It is unclear at this writing whether the shooting was intentional or accidental; the question did not come up in bond court on Monday.
