Senior council fundraising strong despite economy
With many nonprofit groups barely treading water in today's economic climate, it's a relief to hear about the success of the Palatine Township Senior Citizens Council's recent gala.
The annual event was held Feb. 21, and revenue appears to be only slightly down from 2008 - crucial to the council's livelihood since fundraisers account for about 40 percent of the $744,000 budget.
The theme was "Journey to Oz," and more than 220 people made the trip to Emerald City, said Carol Brandt, who served as honorary co-chair with her husband, Jim.
"We've heard other organizations are down 40 percent with their galas," she said. "There are loyal and committed people who realize the value of their senior center."
WGN 720 radio personality Steve Cochran reprised his role as celebrity auctioneer, entertaining guests who furiously bid on trips, airline tickets and box seats to the Cubs and Sox home openers.
Each year, the multipurpose senior center offers social, nutrition, education, recreation and support services to more than 2,700 Palatine Township-area residents 50 and older. The council is one of only five accredited senior centers in the state.
Funding comes from Palatine Township, Palatine Park District, the village of Palatine, AgeOptions, United Way, donations, service fees and fundraising.
