ECC events honor black history
Elgin Community College is celebrating Black History Month. Most events will be held on the Spartan Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. All events are free and open to the public unless noted. For more information, call the Student Life Office at (847) 214-7370.
Black History PowerPoint: Learn interesting black history facts on Tuesday, Feb. 3, outside the Student Life Office in the Student Resource Center, Room SRC 171.
Soul Food Tuesdays: Sample different food items during the lunch hour on Tuesdays, Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24 in the ECC Cafeteria, Student Resource Center.
Soul Food: Enjoy a large selection of soul food items on Wednesday, Feb. 4, in the Student Resource Center outside ECC Cafeteria. Cost is $6.50 per plate.
African Drums and Dance: Hear authentic African music at noon Thursday, Feb. 5, at the Student Resource Center, Jobe Lounge.
"The Wiz": Enjoy the 1970s take on "The Wizard of Oz" at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, in the Advanced Technology Center Auditorium. Free
Gospel Fest: Experience music performed by area gospel choirs from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, in the Advanced Technology Center Auditorium. It is free. In case of inclement weather, this event will be held on Friday, Feb. 13.
Notes Enjoy a free jazz performance by Galan of Flute Juice Productions at noon Wednesday, Feb. 11, in Jobe Lounge, Student Resource Center. A short history of jazz also is presented.
Health Fair hosted by Circle of Wise Women: Get information on how to improve infant wellness and survival from this Kane County group of African-American women from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, in the Student Resource Center, Alumni Room.
"The Great Debaters": Based on a true story, this 2007 film stars Denzel Washington as a debate team coach who uses the power of words to shape a group of underdog students at a historically black college in the 1930s South into an elite debate team at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 3:30 p.m. in the Advanced Technology Center Auditorium. It is free.
Black Student Association 1970s Skating Party: Bring out the disco ball and your best '70s outfit for a night of roller skating on Friday, Feb. 20, at Mainstreet USA Skate Center, 23 W. Streamwood Blvd., Streamwood. There is a $70 cash prize for the person having the best 70s look. Cost is $10 ($8 admission and $2 skate rental).
Blacks in the military: Speaker Wes Scott, chairman of the Human Relations Commission for the city of Elgin, discusses blacks in the military at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, at the Advanced Technology Center Auditorium. It is free.
Ebony Cafe: An open mike for anyone that would like to perform their short stories, poems or songs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, in the Alumni Room, Student Resource Center. It is free.
Dinner: Join in a dinner honoring ECC President David Sam on Friday, Feb. 27, in the Fox Valley University and Business Center, Dining Room. Cost is $5.
