Week 2 football roundup for Cook and Lake County
Rookie head coach Anthony Donatucci picked up his first career head coaching win as Conant rolled past Wheeling 41-7 last Friday in Hoffman Estates.
Quarterback Matt Maize had a huge night for Conant (1-1). The senior rushed for 94 yards and two touchdowns while passing for 115 yards and a touchdown going 9-of-13.
Caden Ryan caught a touchdown pass while Isaiah Paredes, Cooper Hanson and Connor Minogue each had a touchdown run. Wheeling (1-1) got a late touchdown run from Justin Ghibea.
"The victory has brought immense excitement to both the players and the coaching staff," Donatucci said. "We made certain to savor every moment of this win. Celebrating each victory is a priority for us, as it reminds us of the importance of appreciating these moments."
Schaumburg 35, Rolling Meadows 28:
Anthony Digoia rushed for 141 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns for Schaumburg. He saved his best moment for the end when he picked off a pass with 1:01 to play to preserve the win. Nate Silk scored on a 9-yard run for Schaumburg for the winning touchdown with 4:03 to play. Joe Brigham was 15-of-23 for 219 yards and two touchdowns for Rolling Meadows (0-2). Brigham also had a touchdown run.
St. Viator 53, Riverside (Wis) 0:
The Lions (1-1) bounced back in a huge way after losing their opener. Cooper Kmet (16-of-19, 285 yards) threw six touchdown passes to six different receivers. Driese Raap, Dayvion Ellis, Michael Tauscher, Charlie Dolsen, Jaylan Szlachetka, and Zach Mascolo all scored on pass receptions for Viator. Anthony Homann-Tomlin added a rushing touchdown while Frank Clary had an interception return to close out the scoring. Michael Zawilenski also had an interception.
Maine West 49, Waukegan 0:
Tommy Delaney threw a trio of touchdown passes and ran for another as the Warriors (2-0) rolled. Delaney was 13-0f-17 for 160 yards and threw a pair of touchdown passes to Edie Martinez and another to David Diaz. Maksym Makota, Dylan Kroschel and Onell Miller Smith (14 carries, 108 yards) added touchdown runs. Maine West allowed just six first downs and 174 yards of total offense to Waukegan (1-1).
Antioch 55, Zion Benton 27:
Antioch (2-0) continues to ground out wins. For the second game in a row the Sequoits went over 400 rushing yards rushing. Led by Marton Cohen, who rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns and Nick Day, who finished with 108 yards and four touchdowns, Antioch piled up 424 rushing yards.
Geneseo 27, Grayslake Central 7:
Grayslake Central scored with 1:58 left in the first half on a 7-yard pass from Cole Gillette to Colton Ohm to cut their deficit to 13-7. But that's as close as the Rams would get as they lost in the road trip to Western Illinois.
Lake Zurich 16, Glenbrook South 3:
Lake Zurich (2-0) scored the game's final 16 points in the Bears' home opener. Chris Pirrone rushed 25 times for 134 yards and a touchdown. Lincoln Adams also had a touchdown run while Jesus Vilchis kicked a 37-yard field goal. Lake Zurich's defense held Glenbrook South to 147 yards on 79 yards rushing 68 yards passing.
Stevenson 52, Taft 24:
Aidan Crawley threw five touchdown passes as Stevenson (2-0) pulled away from a 17-17 halftime tie. Crawley was 11-of-13 for 280 yards. He threw four touchdowns to Armand Burris (6 receptions, 198 yards) and the other to Zachary Becker. Frank Costabile rushed for 104 yards and Fatman Thorndyke had a touchdown run.
Kaneland 40, Wauconda 13:
Kaneland (1-1) raced out to a 34-7 lead in the third quarter and cruised from there. Wauconda (1-1) got scores from Jackson Rudolph on a one-yard run and Nathan Pilaski on a 61-yard pass from Jake Thorstenson.
Libertyville 34, Richards 14:
Libertyville (2-0) picked up the home win as the Wildcats ready themselves for conference play next week. Quinn Schambow threw four touchdown passes on 19 of 25 passing for 261 yards. Steven Gabic had touchdown receptions of 25 and 11 yards, Blaise Lavista caught one for 40 yards and Josh Holst had an 11-yard catch for a score. Lavista also had a touchdown run.
Maine East 15, Round Lake 12: For the second year in a row, Maine East (1-1) has tasted victory. The Demons beat Round Lake (0-2) for the second consecutive year.
Niles North 20, Leyden 6: Leyden (0-2) fell behind 20-0 and couldn't claw all the way back.
