Des Plaines
• A Des Plaines woman was scammed out of $320 Feb. 13 after she saw an Internet ad for a free dog. She was instructed to send the money by Western Union to a man named Samuel John in Nigeria to have the dog's certificates transferred and then the dog would be delivered Feb. 16. Instead, she received a request for an additional $450. She found the same Nigerian address on another Web site and realized she had been tricked.
• Burglars entered a home on the 500 block of West Dempster Street through an unlocked door between 9:15 and 10:40 a.m. Feb. 18 and stole jewelry and other items with an estimated value of $6,420.
• Burglars broke into a 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck on the 2100 block of Ash Street between 6 p.m. Feb. 17 and 12:40 p.m. Feb. 18 and stole the in-dash stereo/DVD player. Loss was estimated at $500.
• Burglars stole an MP3 player valued at $200 out of a 2005 Hummer H2 in a service garage at the Kia dealership, 855 Rand Road, between 4:30 and 6 p.m. Feb. 18.
Mount Prospect
• Sharyn Nielsen, 42, of the 400 block of Perrie Drive, Elk Grove Village, was charged with theft Feb. 13. Reports said she stole a silverware set valued at $192 out of a home on the 1700 block of Aztec Lane Jan. 31 and pawned it for $450 at RJ Jewelry and Pawn in Elk Grove Village. Her court date is March 3.
• Brian J. Kalvelage, 20, of the 400 block of West Florian Drive, Des Plaines, was arrested around 3:45 p.m. Feb. 9 after a traffic stop at Cottonwood Lane and Robert Drive and charged with possession of marijuana. His court date is Feb. 23.
• A man pumped gas valued at $54 into an Audi SUV at the Marathon gas station, 1201 E. Central Road, around 9:50 a.m. Feb. 18 and drove off without paying.
Prospect Heights
• Vandals used blue paint to spray gang graffiti outside apartment buildings on the 600 block of Pinecrest Drive and 500 block of Piper Lane between 12:30 and 4:45 a.m. Feb. 19.
• Burglars stole a taxi meter and GPS unit out of a 2000 Chevrolet Venture minivan belonging to American Taxi and parked in an apartment lot on the 1400 block of Quaker Lane between 4:30 and 10:20 p.m. Feb. 18. Loss was estimated at $725.
• A man cashed a fraudulent check for $4,690 at the Currency Exchange, 9 S. Wolf Road, around 8 a.m. Feb. 4.
• Vandals smashed the rear window on a 1999 Chevrolet Malibu and a driver's-side window on a 1998 Toyota Corolla on the 800 block of Apple Drive between 7:45 and 8:45 p.m. Feb. 14.
• Burglars broke into a 2006 Mazda 8 in a driveway on the 400 block of Williamsburg Lane overnight Feb. 13-14 and stole a GPS unit, backpack with textbooks and wallet.
•Vandals smashed a driver's-side window on a 2006 Volkswagen Beetle at Eisenhower School, 1 N. Schoenbeck Road, between 8 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. Feb. 12.
• Burglars broke into a 1997 Buick Skylark in an apartment lot on the 1400 block of South Wolf Road between 11:20 p.m. Feb. 16 and 6:30 a.m. Feb. 17 and stole a GPS valued at $200.
Rolling Meadows
• Vandals spray painted graffiti on park benches and equipment at 3461 Crestwood Lane between 9 p.m. Feb. 16 and 8:30 a.m. Feb. 17. Damage was estimated at $200.
Wheeling
• Burglars stole a six-CD changer, MP3 charger and miscellaneous items valued at $900 out of an unlocked 1999 Lexus ES300 in an apartment lot on the 700 block of Mallard Lane between 8 p.m. Feb. 16 and 8:15 a.m. Feb. 17.
• Vandals used white paint to spray graffiti on the rear exterior wall at Hawthorne School, 200 Glendale St., on an unknown date.
• Burglars broke into a 2008 Toyota Matrix on the 1700 block of Huntington Court between 8 and 11 p.m. Feb. 15 and stole a GPS unit. Loss was estimated at $500.
