Fox Lake attempted murder suspect requests jury trial

A Pistakee Highlands man who allegedly tried to kill a 29-year-old Fox Lake woman formally requested a jury trial and pleaded not guilty and to charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a weapon during a dispute on Route 12 near Spring Grove.

Bill V. Canales, 41, of 5012 Westwood Drive in unincorporated McHenry County, is next due in court March 17 and remains in McHenry County Jail unable to post 10 percent of his $300,000 bail.

He allegedly attacked the woman on Jan. 23, police said, stabbing the woman several times in the upper torso and allegedly struck her in the head with a shovel.

Police said the victim was driving Canales in her vehicle when they stopped outside his workplace in the 6800 block of State Park Road. An argument erupted, leading to the stabbing, after which Canales fled and the victim went looking for help along Route 12. She was picked up by a passerby and emergency crews were called in.

The woman was airlifted to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge after the attack with nonlife-threatening injuries.
