Montini 33, Marian Central 0

Speed.

Montini coach Chris Andriano's one-word answer for how his football team shocked Marian Central, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, by the unlikely score of 33-0 in Woodstock.

"Their guys got tired," said Andriano, whose Broncos will move to No. 1 from No. 2 in 5A and share the Suburban Catholic Conference lead with Driscoll at 5-0.

"We did a lot of side-to-side stuff, made them run, they wore down. Offensively, we were able to pretty much run our package," Andriano said.

Quarterback Tom DiCristina completed 14 of 23 passes for 172 yards, while back Johnny Borsellino totaled 125 offensive yards.

Their package included a surprise.

Leading 9-0 on Borsellino's 26-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Sean Cahill's 28-yard field goal at 5:13 of the second, Montini (7-0) took possession deep in Marian turf on Dan Stelter's interception with 4:13 before halftime.

Montini made a first down but after a drop in the end zone and a timeout, was looking at fourth-and-8 from the Hurricanes' 10-yard line.

DiCristina lateraled right to Borsellino, whose halfback pass hit Sal Mazzulla all alone in the back of the end zone.

"There's always that moment in the game where you kind of break the other team's will to win," Borsellino said. "Every game we try to get out and do that, and I think that play was it."

Marian Central (6-1, 4-1) remained without injured quarterback Jon Budmayr, and Montini intercepted typically reliable backup Andrew Stochl 3 times.

Montini's John McMahon also recovered a fumble off a fake punt attempt, and Dex Jones blocked a punt on Marian's next possession.

Both turnovers led to Jones touchdowns, the first on a 42-yard touchdown catch, the second on an 8-yard run for a 30-0 lead at 3:28 of the third.

The Wisconsin-bound Jones was there when Montini lost twice to Marian in 2006, including 24-0 in the first round of the playoffs. He refused to gloat.

"I think it's just the first step," he said. "Our team knows, Marian Central knows, they're going to have a second chance in the playoffs."

Hurricanes coach Ed Brucker, whose offense gained but 143 yards, would love another shot, particularly after two injured receivers further pared his short squad.

"We only have 23 guys, so when guys go down we're scrambling," Brucker said. "And that's basically what we were in, scramble mode, most of the game."
