Tri-State Tollway crash

Police and rescue crews responded to a multi-vehicle accident in the southbound lanes of the Tri-State Tollway between Grand Avenue and Buckley Road near Gurnee. Illinois State Police officials said eight cars and one construction truck were involved. Police say the accident took place at 6:13 a.m. when the truck slammed on the brakes, which started a chain-reaction crash. Police officials said one unidentified person was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with minor, nonlife threatening injuries. Two southbound lanes of I-94 were closed while the accident was cleared. Those lanes reopened about 7:30 a.m. officials said.

Antioch teacher suspended without pay

The Antioch Elementary District 34 school board decided during a special meeting Wednesday to stop paying the salary of seventh-grade social studies teacher Kenneth Johnson. Johnson, a 20-year instructor at the school, was arrested last month and charged with 10 counts of possession of child pornography. More than 1,000 pictures and nearly 100 video clips of child pornography were discovered in Johnson's Wauconda apartment. He had been on paid leave until this decision by the board. He cannot be fired until the district completes its internal investigation, administrators say.

Third trial delayed

The third trial for Juan Rivera in the 1992 rape and murder of a Waukegan baby sitter has been delayed until April 13. Lake County Circuit Judge Christopher Starck agreed to the continuance Thursday to allow attorneys on both sides more time to prepare for the trial. Rivera, 35, has twice been convicted of killing 11-year-old Holly Staker and sentenced to life in prison, but new trials were ordered after both convictions. Also on Thursday, defense attorney Thomas Sullivan told Starck the FBI had compared a DNA sample found on the dead girl's body that does not match Rivera to samples in its national criminal database. No match to anyone in the database was found for the DNA, Sullivan said.

With the April 7 consolidated election just two months away, now would be a good time to register to vote. The deadline to register if you want to vote in that election is March 10. You can register to vote at the Lake County clerk's office in Waukegan and at other locations throughout the county. For more information, visit lakecountyil.gov/countyclerk.
