Learn healthy strategies for managing today's stress
In the workplace and at home, stress and other difficult situations are at an all-time high. Constantly worried about being laid off can cause serious problems for workers. As talk of the banking crisis, falling housing prices, rising consumer debt and declining retail sales bring up worries about the nation's economic health, more Americans feel additional stress and anxiety about their financial future.
Money and the state of the economy are two of the top sources of stress for 80 percent of Americans, according to the American Psychological Association's 2008 Stress in America survey. Add to the mix headlines about closing businesses and job losses, and many begin to fear how they can handle any further financial crunch. But, like most of our everyday stress, this extra tension can be managed. Psychologists first recommend taking pause and not panicking. According to Todd Burnett, clinical psychologist, in Delnor's psychological services program, "These times of uncertainty affect us all, but there are healthy strategies available for managing stress during tough economic times."
Burnett will discuss these strategies at a free informative session titled "Managing Your Stress in Tough Economic Times" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at the Delnor Health & Wellness Center, 296 Randall Road in Geneva. Registration is required. Call (630) 208-3999 to register or for information.
According to research done by the American Psychological Association, some 84 percent of Americans realize that good mental health plays an important role in their overall health and well-being, yet the same research shows that almost half of Americans don't know when it's appropriate to seek professional help. Burnett adds, "Everyday people face new challenges and difficult life decisions that may cause anxiety disorders, depression and other emotional difficulties. And today, this is more prevalent than ever. This is where psychological counseling services can help."
Burnett will share his experience and also be able to direct people to other community resources for help as well. "If you continue to be overwhelmed by the stress, it is important to talk to someone who can help you address the emotions behind your financial worries, manage stress, and change unhealthy behaviors."
When is it time to ask for help? Here are a few indicators: you feel trapped, like there's nowhere to turn; you worry excessively and can't concentrate; and its affecting your sleep, eating habits, job, relationships, and everyday life.
The Psychological Services Program offered through Delnor's Rehabilitation Services Department is geared to providing assistance with psychological, emotional, behavioral and cognitive problems. All treatment programs begin with an evaluation. Results are used to set goals for a patient's recovery and to establish an individualized treatment plan. Counseling services are handled in a confidential, caring and compassionate environment by a clinical psychologist and licensed counselor, both members of the Delnor rehab team.
